We've added Member Map feature to the forum. Members can see where other members live. It is still a WIP and more features will appear as I program them . Latitude and Longitude have been added to everyone's Forum Profile Information (just below the Location field). It is optional and anyone not wanting to appear on the map, can simply leave the fields blank. Co-ordinates need to be in decimal form/decimal based. Here are the fields and sample map: You can click the "See Map..." button to test the co-ordinates. Get your co-ordinates herehttp://www.bcca.org/misc/qiblih/latlong.htmlCovert Degrees/Minutes to Decimal here:http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/convert_lat_long/Futch

If you can't see the map after clicking the "See Map..." button, your browser might be blocking the new window (popups?).

But how do we see the map with all members pinpointed That feature is coming. Certain parts get too crowded so I'll add an option to show members within a certain raidius. Then you can click the member name to see it on the map. Take a look at England/Germany/Denmark... http://www.maschinenkrueger.com/forum/map/MapMembers.php

I have loaded my coordinates taken from Google earth and converted to decimal. Apparently I live on a Norwegian oil rig in the eastern part of the North sea.

I got the same when i first entered the coordinates, they had me about 100 miles out in the North Sea. Second attempt had me in Africa somewhere, of course it was the software which was wrong, not me.

Damn, Europe's getting crowded. Will there be a feature to zoom in on the map?

Will there be a feature to zoom in on the map? Yep! I've got zoom figured out and working. The only issue is the size of the JPEG being created. I need to downsize it or zoom on certain portions. Have not had time to program it. Should be able to in a few weeks. F

Back again!! I've added a zoom feature along with some random name placement to minimise the chance of overlapping names...still requires some tweaking but it's close. http://www.maschinenkrueger.com/forum/test/map/Zoom.php?zoom=4I'll re-do it so that the server maintains a JPG version of the map, updated whenever someone updates their co-ords. But have a play now but please dont abuse because the largest zoom produces a 500KB JPEG..... To get on the map, edit your profile. Instructs at the top of this thread. thanks F

Cool, great work Futch. I was looking forward to this. Lot's of people from Europe. Now just hope more people enter their coords to their profile.

Cheers Lode, and welcome to the forums! Indeed, Holland's getting crowded on the map...

yeah but the JPEG starts to get unwieldy beyond x4, nearing 1Mb at the lowest quality. that's a chunk of overhead. ideally i'd like a vector-based graphic map, like what you see in PDF docs. then we could all zoom in anywhere, any depth. also tossing around the idea of region/country based maps....but that might be over engineering things a little.

I know it's a completely different direction, and I don't know if it's at all possible but: Isn't it possible to do something in Google Earth or something the like?

I know how to do it with 1 person but not sure how to do a batch. Google have a developer API but it's faster for me to jump into PHP than learn *another* gorram software product

Mmmm, just put my lat/long in and I'm still not where I know I am! I used a satellite dish/where to point it in the sky web site to get fairly close lat/long, did the conversion and thought, "Ah ha! Nailed it" (having spent 10 minutes repeatedly being told I'm from the other side of the moat) but I'm still a Belgian apparently...
